Michigan Lake Superior Property For Sale on Point Abbaye. The Point Abbaye Peninsula is a 12.3-mile-long peninsula that juts out into Lake Superior. This body of land is located in central Baraga County, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This boreal ecosystem is bounded by the Keweenaw Bay on the west and the Huron Bay on the east. Considered a very special place by the Ojibwa who fished, hunted, and camped here for generations, it remained mostly untouched until the late 1800s. A forked tree located in the site clearing in the middle of the property may be an Ojibwa trail or site marker. Point Abbaye has several Indian sites along the point and it was common to mark them by bending trees. The Hebard and Thurberg Lumber Company leased the peninsula in 1877 and began harvesting its old growth forests, and carrying the logs to the nearby sawmills at Pequaming. Today the thickly wooded second-growth forests are managed for production of pulpwood, and the shoreline is dotted with fine private homes and cottages, and vacant land parcels. The northern end of the Peninsula has Copper Country State Forest lands and the County of Baraga has a beautiful park located at the rugged, rocky tip. It takes about a half-hour drive over the twisty road to get there, but the view from the rugged sandstone shelf there is worth the drive! There are hiking trails, two outhouses, and a small campground for overnight camping. You might be able to see The Huron Island Light flashing from the rocky freshwater archipelago located about seven miles beyond the end of the peninsula. These islands are named the Huron Islands in honor of the Hurons who once lived in the area - and are a national wildlife area. The ancient Lake Superior sea beds have created some shear bluffs with high overlooks on both sides of the peninsula... And each side has its own special features. There are stunning sunset views on the west side, clear-day views of the Keweenaw Peninsula to the north, and those views of the Huron Islands and Huron Mountains from the east side. Lake Superior fishing for salmon, whitefish and lake trout abounds on either side! Another local passtime here is nature photography, and you'll have opportunities for that here year round! Whitetail deer, Black bear, Coyote, and Bald eagle sightings are common. The property being offered for sale has 165 feet of shoreline that is on the "sunset view" side! The property is level with a very gentle slope. There is a grassy-gravel pathway in place to the shoreline, which is composed of sandstone rocks and course sand. Here you'll be able to launch your sea-kayak, or go wading or swimming. There's enough room to build a campfire, relax, and watch the beautiful sunsets and Aurora Borealis displays which are also visible here! Trees on the property consist primarily of mature Maple, Birch, White spruce, Balsam fir, and Northern white-cedar. A nice shared driveway system brings you into the property, to a nice clearing. Access to the property is via a county maintained road that is plowed in the winter to a point about a mile past this property's driveway, so you can get there year-round! Plan to view this property soon!
